These recognize outstanding journalistic work from the past year in the Asia-Pacific region.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony took place on Thursday, June 20, at an awards dinner in Hong Kong and marked the 26th consecutive year that the awards have been given out. Global, regional, Chinese-language, and Bahasa media outlets submitted more than 700 entries across 21 categories.<\/p>\n<p>Among the themes that stood out this year were the worrying state of healthcare across the region, and public policy, particularly in the world\u2019s two most populous nations, India and China. Here are some highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>EXCELLENCE in REPORTING on WOMEN\u2019S ISSUES<\/strong> &#8211; Malaysiakini\u2019s expos\u00e9, <a href=\"https:\/\/newslab.malaysiakini.com\/stateless\/en\/\">Baby snatching: How stateless mums lose their infants in Sabah hospital<\/a>, won the top award in the regional group.<\/li>\n<li><strong>EXCELLENCE in JOURNALISM INNOVATION<\/strong> &#8211; The Financial Times\u2019s much-talked about project, <a href=\"https:\/\/ig.ft.com\/china-mosques\/\">Satellites, drones and programming tools reveal the transformation of China\u2019s mosques<\/a>, won the top award in the global group. It detailed Beijing\u2019s effort to \u201charmonize\u201d mosques by reconstructing or demolishing them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>EXCELLENCE in FEATURE WRITING<\/strong> &#8211; The Sydney Morning Herald won the regional Award for Excellence for its piece, <a href=\"https:\/\/sopawards.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Activists-fear-Chinas-influence-in-Inner-Mongolia-will-turn-province-into-next-Xinjiang.pdf\">China\u2019s Mongolian Reach<\/a>, detailing the systematic erosion of Mongolian identity. Initium Media received an Honorable Mention in the Chinese-language group for <a href=\"https:\/\/sopawards.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/%E3%80%90%E3%80%8C%E8%B5%B0%E7%B7%9A%E3%80%8D%E9%87%8D%E7%A3%85%E7%8F%BE%E5%A0%B4%E3%80%91%E7%82%BA%E4%BA%86%E6%BD%A4%EF%BC%8C%E4%BB%96%E5%80%91%E5%9C%A8%E6%8B%89%E7%BE%8E%E9%95%B7%E5%BE%81%E5%9B%9B%E5%8D%83%E5%85%AC%E9%87%8C%EF%BD%9C%E7%AB%AF%E5%82%B3%E5%AA%92-Initium-Media.pdf\">Journey for Hope: Chinese Migrants\u2019 Perilous Path to the U.S.<\/a>, which chronicled why some people are prepared to take huge risks in search of new life\u2014 a popular theme among several entries in this year\u2019s awards.<\/li>\n<li><strong>EXCELLENCE in TECHNOLOGY REPORTING<\/strong> &#8211; Reuters\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/us-china-tech-cables\/\">Cable Wars<\/a>, a behind-the-scenes look at how the West is trying to stop China from building undersea fiber-optic cables, won the top global award.<\/li>\n<li><strong>EXCELLENCE in INFOGRAPHICS<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/us-china-tech-cables\/\">How to Cool Down a City<\/a> by The New York Times won this category in the global group with what the judges called \u201csuperb work\u201d balancing \u201cbeing explanatory and captivating.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>SOPA AWARD for PUBLIC SERVICE JOURNALISM<\/strong> &#8211; Bloomberg News won this coveted award for its series, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2023-12-15\/how-pediatric-cancer-patients-received-tainted-chemo?srnd=storythread-RYQRPADWX2PS01&#038;sref=vCYB4ceN\">Bad Medicine<\/a>. Bloomberg traced the fallout in various countries from problematic drugs manufactured by Indian-owned pharmaceutical companies.
